The Philadelphia Eagles enter their 2019 training camp with seven safeties on the current roster. Those seven safeties are Malcolm Jenkins, Rodney McLeod, Tre Sullivan, Blake Countess, Andrew Sendejo, Deiondre’ Hall, and Trae Elston. Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod are absolute locks to make the Eagles final 53-man roster when the season starts on September 8th. The Eagles will most likely carry four safeties during the season to give the team depth at the position in case of injury. The question going into camp is which if the remaining five safeties will grab the last two safety spots on the roster. It will be a great camp battle between Blake Countess, Tre Sullivan, Deiondre’ Hall, Trae Elston, and veteran safety Andrew Sendejo.
Tre Sullivan is entering his third year in the league and year three with defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Blake Countess who was initially drafted by the Eagles. Blake, however, has played the last three years with the Rams before being signed by the Eagles. Deiondre’ Hall was a fourth round of the Bears in 2016 and has only played in 23 career games. Trae Elston has been undrafted journeyman since coming into the league in 2016. Andrew Sendejo has been in the league since 2010 but didn’t find a real home till 2011 when he signed with the Vikings. He was their starting safety from 2013 to 2018 but has dealt with injuries since 2015. His last season with the Viking was cut short after five games due to a season-ending injury. The Eagles also have two cornerbacks that can play a safety/corner hybrid. So with all that said, these five remaining safeties will have a lot to fight for in training camp.
With Tre Sullivan entering his third season in the NFL and third under defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz he will make the Eagles final 53-man roster. The reason behind Sullivan making the roster is because he has extreme familiarity with defense and the defensive schemes that the Eagles play during the game and certain situations throughout the game. His familiarity with the defense and his play on special teams will land Tre Sullivan on the Eagles final roster. Deiondre’ Hall and Trae Elston are 99.9% locks to be cut by the Eagles, so that leaves Blake Countess and Andrew Sendejo battling for the last safety spot on the team. The Eagles will have tough decision because both of these players will be good backups and key players on special teams. If they do keep Sendejo the team will lose a comp pick next year though. The last safety to make the Eagles final 53-man roster will be Andrew Sendejo. Sendejo will make the team because he is a savvy veteran to the league who has had success when playing.
Going into the first regular-season game of the year, the four safeties on the squad will be Malcolm Jenkins, Rodney McLeod, Tre Sullivan, and Andrew Sendejo. Jenkins and McLeod will be the starters on defense and will be used the most in most the team’s defensive packages. Sullivan and Sendejo will see some snaps on defense, but they will mostly be used on special teams when the season starts. All four of these players will play an essential role on the Eagles team.
