Packers vs Lions Week 17 Preview: What the Packers Need to do to Lock up a First Round Bye

Green Bay finishes out their season going into Detroit to take on the Lions. The Lions have been struggling with David Blough at QB. They have been bit by the injury bug this season. First losing Kerryon Johnson (he’s back now), then Matthew Stafford, TJ Hockenson, and Marvin Jones. It’s tough to win when you lose all those important pieces throughout the season.

Green Bay is a heavy favorite to win this one. In order for them to have a chance at the number 1 seed for the playoffs. Here are the scenarios:

Win: They can get the 1 seed with a win and a 49ers loss to Seattle.
Or they clinch the 2 seed with a win and a 49ers win.

Loss: If they lose and the Saints win, the Packers fall to the 3 seed in the playoffs and they lose out on their first round bye.
But if the Packers lose and the Saints lose the Packers get to keep the 2 Seed

Ultimately if the the Packers win their Playoff seeding fate comes down to the winner of the San Francisco-Seattle game on Sunday night

Outlook for the Game

Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur said in a press conference on Thursday that “the team is preparing for this game as if it was a playoff game”. It makes sense because if they win then they lock up the 2 seed and get the first round bye that they desire. It is an easier path when the Packers only need to win 2 games to advance to the Super Bowl instead of 3. Also there’s potential for both of those games to be at home.

The Packers are the more healthy and complete team. They should be able to do as they please on offense in this one. We should be seeing another big game from Davante Adams and Aaron Jones. They both were crucial to the victory last week.

The way I see this game playing out is the Packers come out on fire and jump ahead by 3 scores putting Detroit in a hole that they can’t recover from. The Packers lock up the 2 seed and give themselves a chance at acquiring the 1 seed.

Fantasy Outlook

Packers: QB Aaron Rodgers, RB Aaron Jones, WR Davante Adams
Lions: WR Kenny Golladay and RB Kerryon Johnson

Packers: Jimmy Graham, Geronimo Allison, Marquez Valdez Scantling
Lions: The rest of their offense

Surprising Performance

Packers: WR Allen Lazard
Lions: WR Danny Amendola
