The Kansas City Chiefs are heading back to the AFC Championship game for the second season in a row, this time hoping for a different result. Last season, the Chiefs fell to the Patriots in overtime and were just an off-sides penalty away from going to the Super Bowl. This season, they will face the Tennessee Titans, a team that the Chiefs are familiar with due to their match-up earlier in the year where the Titans took the win in dramatic fashion in Tennessee.
This is the first time in franchise history that the Chiefs are hosting the AFC Championship game in consecutive seasons. A huge honor, especially because the AFC Championship trophy is named after their late owner Lamar Hunt. Winning this trophy would be huge in their run for the biggest of trophies, the Lombardi Trophy.
To get to the Super Bowl will be no easy task for the Chiefs. They will have to face a very confident Titans team that is playing some excellent football, already beating the number one scoring defense (Patriots) and the number one scoring offense and number one overall seed in the AFC playoffs (Ravens). The Titans have been heavily relying on the workhorse back Derrick Henry, who is having a monster playoff run including owning the record for most rushing yards in his first four playoff games. They are also controlling the clock by having long drives with running the football and putting trust in their defense. Their defense only allowed the number one scoring offense to score twelve points in a dominating performance in Baltimore.
While the Titans are coming off a great performance in the Divisional round of the playoffs, the Chiefs are coming off an interesting game with the Texans. The Chiefs found themselves in a very deep hole, being down 24-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Chiefs were able to fight themselves back to an incredible comeback and go into halftime with a lead of 28-24. When they came back from halftime, the Chiefs never looked back, going on a tear to a final score of 51-31. Patrick Mahomes was absolutely dominant with five touchdown passes, three of those to Travis Kelce who himself had an incredible game with ten catches and over one hundred yards receiving.
With both teams coming off of exciting performances in the divisional round, it will make the AFC Championship even more exciting. Keys to the game for the Chiefs to take home the Lamar Hunt Trophy are, they have to minimize the impact Derrick Henry has in this game. This is a tall task because Henry has been on a absolute tear so far this playoffs. The Chiefs motto for this game is to take out the legs of the machine. If they can do that and make Ryan Tannehill throw more against this good secondary of the Chiefs that puts the Chiefs in a very good situation to win the game. The final key to win the AFC Championship is the Chiefs have to attack the secondary of the Titans. The Titans ranked 24th against the pass this season. Last time these two teams faced off in week 10, Patrick Mahomes was able to throw for 446 yards.
The Chiefs have a chance to go to the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years. They let it slip between their fingers last year and now have gotten themselves in the right position to actually make it to the Super Bowl and hopefully gain the right to be called the 2019-2020 Super Bowl Champions. Here’s to the Chiefs bringing the Lamar Hunt Trophy to where it has always belonged. Then take it one step further to bringing home the Lombardi Trophy.
