The Patriots looked to give their talented secondary some depth in the 2019 draft by selecting Joejuan Williams with their second-round pick. The Patriots liked the skill set and ability that Williams has enough that they traded up to get him in the draft. He has the size and athletic profile that the Patriots like to use in their secondary, but due to being so deep at the position he did not get on the field often this season. HE only played in 9 games this season and was only able to get 4 solo tackles, 1 assist, and 1 pass defense during the season. There was development during the season and the team was looking forward to what he would be able to add heading into the 2020 season.
Williams was arrested on Jan. 17th in Nashville, his hometown while doing 90 mph in a 70mph zone. During the stop, it was also discovered by the State Trooper that there were illegal drugs in the vehicle, and he was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession of drugs without a prescription, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Williams was released on bond the next day and is awaiting his court date later in February. This is not the off-season that he was looking to have after his rookie season. The league is not always consistent with their punishments but based on the situation it will be interesting to see what punishment they decide to place on Williams. Obviously, they will wait until the court date is past and get all the information before coming to a decision. Based on previous similar situations I would expect that he will at a minimum be suspended for 4 games without pay in the 2020 season, but of course, the Patriots could also release their 2nd round pick depending on how bad the case ends up being. The Patriots have already had a busy off-season with Julian Edelman also being arrested this month in California. They will have a lot to sort out before they can start getting ready for next season.
