XFL WR Cam Phillips is Demanding NFL Attention

The XFL’s excitement levels are at their peak when Houston Roughnecks duo PJ Walker and Cam Phillips are showcasing their chemistry on the field.

Phillips went absolutely berserk in a closely contested shootout with the St. Louis Battlehawks in week 2. The Roughnecks receiver put on a clinic going 8 for 63 with 3 trips beyond the goal line to help push his team to 2-0. That was also good enough for 32.3 fantasy points and the number 1 spot on DrafKings. The three touchdown performance enabled Houston to produce a second consecutive XFL Star of the Week, the first being dual-threat quarterback PJ Walker. The weekly honor is decided of course by the fans, in a Twitter poll put out by XFL Football Operations.

Phillips has been torching opposing secondaries and shaking defenders in his first two starts. He has racked up 12 receptions for 130 yards on 18 targets and also found pay-dirt on 4 occasions. As a 6th round selection by head coach June Jones in the 2020 XFL Draft, Phillips will continue to see plenty of opportunities to catch the football in the this well executed “Run & Gun” style of offense.

Lets give some credit where it is due, Phillips’ success can be attributed to the efficiency and execution from his quarterback. But by all accounts, if Walker is the Sheriff of the XFL, then Phillips could very well be a Deputy US Marshal. Walker stole the show in week 1 as Phillips caught 4 balls on 8 targets for 67 yards and a touchdown, but in week 2 we saw the emergence of one of the most dangerous combinations of quarterback to receiver in the XFL. Walker has been accurate (61.4%) to begin the season completing 43 of 70 attempts with an impeccable 7:1 TD to INT ratio. Here’s the best part, he’s by far the best fantasy asset accounting for 69 points (nice!) through two weeks. You can bet that the offense will flow through Walker, either with his arms or legs, and potentially find itself to Phillips when plays break down.

Getting back to Phillips, the 24 year old out of Virginia Tech showed incredible ball skills and route running over the course of his two starts in Houston. The Roughnecks will be on the road for the first time this season in week 3 versus the Tampa Bay Vipers, so we will see how much of a damper that may put on his game, if any. Phillips was named All ACC First Team in 2017 and had a stint in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills as practice squad player, but was waived in August. If not for his dismissal from the Bills, Phillips may have never gotten the exposure or the quality opportunities he has enjoyed from PJ Walker and the XFL thus far. Honestly Josh Allen doesn’t throw much anyway.

Needless to say, Phillips and company will be poised and ready for their 2 P.M. EST tilt in Tampa Bay on Saturday. These guys do play “For the Love of Football” after all.
