What if I told you, that an NFL quarterback threw for 5,109 yards and added 33 touchdown passes. What if I also told you, that he threw the ball to the opposing team’s 30 times. What if I told you, that he would be replaced by the greatest of all time, Tom Brady.
Who’s the player? Well, his name is Jameis Winston. And he was the most scrutinized NFL quarterback of the 2019-2020 NFL season. He now finds himself looking for a new home.
Where will that be? Could it be with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he could battle it out with “Old man Big Ben”? Or could Jameis find himself back in the sunshine state with the Jacksonville Jaguars? Or will the Chargers choose Mr. 30 for 30 over the projected starter Tyrod Taylor? Lets try and answer these questions!
So why the Steelers? Well, first off, Ben Roethlisberger is INJURY PRONE 100%! He is a 38 year old liability. Other than that, he is a great quarterback. But if he is to go down this season, as I envision, it wouldn’t be so mind boggling to insert Jameis Winston.
Head coach Mike Tomlin, who almost managed to get a hobbled Pittsburgh Steelers team to the playoffs last season. Could be the answer to Jameis Winton’s recent struggles. Tomlin, who had to turn to the likes of Duck Hodges and Mason Rudolph last season did a masterful job. Although he led the Steelers to an (8-8) record last season, the job he did with limited talent on the roster, just shows the type of coach he is.
Jameis Winton, who is a 26 year old, could benefit from sitting behind a future Hall of famer in Ben Roethlisberger. And after Jameis Winston led the league in passing yards and interceptions, maybe taking a step back could be the right thing for him.
Winston will have that opportunity to sit back and evaluate the field from the sideline and learn from a seasoned vet, who Jameis kinda resembles. They both have cannons for arms, and they are both physical quarterbacks. But the difference between the two, are the interceptions. The most interceptions Big Ben threw in a single season, was 23 back in 2006. And, well, Jameis threw 30 this past season.
The thing Big Ben could help Jameis Winston with is his decision making on the field. With that being said, if Jameis Winston is to learn from Big Ben, then maybe he could be the next franchise quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
If Winston is to join the Steelers next season, and if he is to overtake the staring role. He will thrive in the Steelers offense. Last season Jameis Winston led the league in passing with 5,109 yards. He was ranked in the top 5 among all quarterbacks. And with having receivers like Juju Smith-Schuster and Diontae Johnson and newly acquired Eric Ebron, look for all of their fantasy stocks to rise up.
As of right now, it’s Gardner Minshew mania in Jacksonville. The rookie quarterback went (6-6) and threw for 3,271 yards and tacked on 21 touchdown passes. And if you were wondering how much interceptions he threw, well, it was only 6.
Now, Jameis Winston will not be looking forward to sitting behind a second year quarterback, when Winston will be in his 6th season, and wanting to prove to everyone that he could be a top 5 quarterback in the league.
But will the Jaguars want to bet on Jameis Winston, or will they want to roll with their new found national treasure in Gardner Minshew? This would be an interesting quarterback battle, that the NFL world would love to see, and love to have. I can see it now, “Mr. 30 for 30 Vs The NFL’s Uncle Rico!
The Jaguars offense isn’t the flashiest, which means Jameis Winston’s numbers could decrease. Also, the Jaguars have a workhorse in Leonard Fournette, which means the number of pass attempts would go down. In fact, the Jaguars ranked 12th in pass attempts per game. Opposed to the Buccaneers, who ranked 4th in the NFL.
Los Angeles Chargers
Jameis Winston in L.A.? Lets get that 30 for 30 directed? Am I right?
Seriously though, Jameis Winston is looking for home and there aren’t many of them out of there. Which brings me to the Los Angeles Chargers. The organization decided to move on from Phillip Rivers this past month. And now they are set to have Tyrod Taylor take over the reigns.
Which makes sense. The Chargers offensive line ranked 29th in the NFL last season. So, by having Taylor take over, means he can create when the pocket collapses. But If Jameis Winston is to suit up for the L.A Chargers, the offensive line will need to shape up. We all know why it must shape up, and it’s no secret. But if that happens, then the Chargers offense could potentially be one of the scariest in the NFL.
The offensive fire power that is on the Chargers is ridiculous. Their wide receiving core consist of All-pro Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, tight end Hunter Henry, and you can even throw in Austin Ekeler who had over 900 receiving yards. Jameis Winston would fit in just fine, with all of the weapons that head coach Anthony Lynn has at his disposal.
Will this be Jameis Winston’s new home? Well it could be, but many people are speculating that another former NFC south quarterback could sign with the Chargers, and that’s Cam Newton. But, Winston is due for second chance, and the question is, will the Chargers take that chance?
Insert Jameis Winston into this offense, and the league will be put on notice. But when it comes to fantasy. Well, let’s start with Austin Ekeler. The Swiss Army knife that he is will benefit both Winston and Ekeler. Last seasons, Winston didn’t have that luxury to dump it off to his running back. I mean he did, but he was no Austin Ekeler. Winston’s presence will help stimulate the offensive numbers for all the skill players.
Will Mr. 30 for 30 Rebound?
Despite all of the 30 interceptions that Jameis Winston threw last season, he has top 5 talent and there is no denying that. He simply just needs to make better reads and better decisions on the field. And if he is to clean up all the turnovers, then I firmly believe that Jameis could carve out a great career for himself.
