Kansas City Chiefs Restructure Sammy Watkins Contract

It is official the Kansas City Chiefs are bringing wide receiver Sammy Watkins back. The deal was announced earlier this morning.

Before this move their were talks of Watkins getting traded. With this signings those reports are dead and the Chiefs will have at least one more season with Watkins.

Have the Raiders free agency moves pushed them past the Chiefs? Read it here

Watkins has just been an okay wide receiver for the Chiefs but he brings big play upside. He has yet to play all 16 but the Chiefs have also brought back Demarcus Robinson. The team has wide receiver depth and guys who are game breakers and as we have seen in 2018 and 2019 that is a deadly combo for this team.

Fantasy Implications

Sammy Watkins

Sammy Watkins restructuring his deal with the Chiefs will have an impact on fantasy football. First off, this is good for his own fantasy value. Playing with arguably the best quarterback in the league right now in Patrick Mahomes is better than not.

Watkins has been disappointing for fantasy since joining the Chiefs outside of week 1 in 2019. He has yet to eclipse 700 yards and 4 touchdowns in a season. This will be someone who in redraft for 2020 should not be drafted before the 7th round. This is someone you want as a wide receiver 3/4 on your team. You want that because you aren’t investing a high round pick in him, and you can drop him if needed. He is someone who can boom for your team and be a later round steal. He could become an every week starter for your team if that happens.

Tyreek Hill

Tyreek Hill will not have much change with his current fantasy value. He is still a top 10 wide receiver in the league and in fantasy football. Watkins will take away some coverage from him in certain sets but not much will change for Hill. He will still be a boom/bust wide receiver who you have to draft in the 1st or 2nd round.

Mecole Hardman

Mecole Hardman was one of my favorite rookies last year to draft in dynasty leagues. This will be a player who in 3 years will be a great fantasy wide receiver. For now, he is a later round wide receiver who you should draft in the double digit rounds in redraft for 2020. He can breakout in year two and establish himself in this offense but I expect that to happen more once Watkins is gone.

Patrick Mahomes

This is a good signing for Patrick Mahomes. Watkins has disappeared at times but gives Mahomes another viable option to throw to. When defenses take Hill out of the game deep, Mahomes can hit Watkins underneath crossing the field. We saw how deadly in fantasy this combo is week 1 of 2019. Maybe we will see more games like that in 2020 now that they are back together.
