Kansas City Chiefs sign DeAndre Washington to a one-year deal

The Kansas City Chiefs have made another singing this free agency. There is another mouth to feed at the running back position with the Chiefs singing DeAndre Washington.

According to Yahoo! Sports NFL reporter Terez Paylor, the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to a deal with running back DeAndre Washington. Paylor notes it’s a one-year deal.

Washington has played his entire career in Oakland and did not see a lot of work until Josh Jacobs was injured late last season. In his career, Washington has 282 carries for 1,122 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns. He’s also caught an additional 88 passes for 613 yards and 1 receiving touchdown.

This move adds another back to the crowded Chiefs backfield. Damien Williams had to deal with competition all of last season. This signing will probably continue that competition into 2020.

The Chiefs have 4 other running backs on the roster outside of Williams and Washington. The Chiefs will have Darrel Williams back from a season-ending injury and second-year back Darwin Thompson, who hopes to earn far more playing time than his rookie season. In addition, Mike Weber and Elijah McGuire are on the roster as well.

The Chiefs have been linked to drafting a running back in the 2020 NFL Draft but this move might mean the team decides to skip out this year. They could wait another year to take a running back and give Damien Williams the chance to be the number one. He has shown in big moments he can handle the job of being the number one back for the Chiefs.

Fantasy Implications

This signing is fantastic for Damien William’s fantasy football value. Washington should not compete and take away many touches from Williams. We figured the Chiefs would add a back in either free agency or in the draft this offseason. If the Chiefs had spent a 1-3 round draft pick on a running back, that would’ve killed Williams fantasy value.

This move is just a depth signing and maybe Williams loses some work but I would not be worried about it. Thompson was very underwhelming in his rookie campaign and I expect him to get the ball more in 2020, but like Washington, not enough to really make an impact.

Right now, Williams is still the number one on the team and I think is someone who will always give dynasty owners headaches. He is someone I will be staying away from in dynasty. I feel like eventually the team will move on from him but it will not be this year. Dynasty running backs not on rookie deals are not worth being drafted high unless it is a top tier player, which Williams is not.
