Buccaneers Trade up; Select Tristan Wirfs at 13

Once upon a time, there was an offensive tackle who turned heads at the NFL combine. That guy was Tristan Wirfs. Wirfs is arguably the top tackle in this season’s NFL draft. Some had him going as high as top 5, and many had him in the top 10. Wirfs, a 6 foot 5 320 pound OT from Iowa, took a minor fall in the draft. The Buccaneers made sure to take advantage and landed their guy.

Trade Details

Although some people are questioning why the Buccaneers moved up one pick, the answer is simple. A team was trying to move up to the thirteenth pick, per source. The Bucs had a plan to land Brady elite protection and that is what they did. The Buccaneers landed pick 13 & pick 245 and are sending San Francisco pick 14 and 117.

Wirfs Profile

According to NFL.Com Draft & Play Profile, they explain Wirfs as followed:

“Right tackle with elite body type and freaky testing potential who might fall victim to elevated expectations based upon traits and Iowa pedigree. He has tremendous core strength and moves smoothly, over-sets and isn’t the explosive drive-blocker former Iowa star tackle Brandon Scherff was. Wirfs has tools to handle gap-blocking duties while thriving in outside zone. If Wirfs can learn to play inside out and add a more effective jump-set into his repertoire, he could take a big step forward. Consistency of play could take some time, but he has the ability to become a good starter at either right tackle or guard.”

Fantasy Impact

For starters, this will help just about all Buccaneers in fantasy. Tom Brady should have more time to throw and Rojo should have more gaps to find in the ground game. With Brady having Wirfs, look for him to feel more comfortable in the pocket. Although long time veteran Demar Dotson was a suitable starter, this sure is an upgrade. Brady instantly becomes a must start and Rojos draft stock is on the rise.

Overall Draft Grade: A

Without a doubt this pick receives an A. Wirfs was not supposed to last this long. The Buccaneers made it known they wanted a tackle, and they got their guy. Offensive linemen from the Big 10 are often successful, and look for Wirfs to follow suit. He pairs up nicely on the line alongside Ryan Jensen, Ali Marpet, Alex Cappa, and Donovan Smith.
