John Lynch and company felt comfortable trading #13 to the Buccaneers for #14 and #117 (4th rounder). The Bucs picked up Tristan Wirfs to help protect Tom Brady during his twilight seasons. San Francisco was on the clock for most of their entire 10 minutes at #14 before submitting their pick. The 49ers passed on Jerry Jeudy and CeeDee Lamb, who were still on the board. Many expected the pick was expected to be between the two of them.
With the 14th pick in the 2020 NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers select….Javon Kinlaw, DT from South Carolina! He’s a guy that’s been touted as the #2 DT in the draft. He’s got the speed and power to move the line of scrimmage. Fantastic technique and long arms help give him the edge against the opponent’s O-line. He projects to be an immediate starter and will try to fill the gap left by the trade of DeForest Buckner. He has some big shoes to fill but has the skills he needs to fill them.
From a fantasy perspective, expect more of the same from the 49ers D that you saw last year. Buckner was their biggest loss on Defense this year and the 49ers grabbed one of the two guys that could fill in for him immediately. They were a top-3 defense in most formats at the end of last year and that is my expectation in 2020.
Overall, I had prepared myself for the likelihood that we weren’t taking one of the flashy names at Wide Receiver and this fills one of San Francisco’s primary needs. They picked up a 4th for moving back one spot on a night of very few trades (so far). Looking ahead at #31, I wouldn’t be surprised to see another trade back.
