For much of the 2019 season, and the short time after the Texans divisional round playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, not much could be heard from Houston’s ownership about the club’s vacant general manager position. In a move that ensued Romeo Crennel stepping aside and allowing Anthony Weaver to be promoted from defensive line coach to defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans, Cal McNair broke his silence and officially named Bill O’Brien the new GM of the team. McNair also updated the title for Jack Easterby, more clearly defining the role he would now serve as VP of team development. The move comes with little to no shock value, and ultimately the updated titles will seemingly end Houston’s pursuit of Patriots’ director of player personnel Nick Caserio for the GM position.
Momentum has been one of the major headliners for the Texans 2019-2020 season. The Texans carried theirs over from the 4th quarter and overtime of the wild card round and into a perfect 1st quarter of football in Arrowhead. Houston struck first, and fast. Deshaun Watson hit Kenny Stills on a 54 yard score, followed up by a few defensive stops, a blocked punt returned for a TD, and a muffed punt recovery that set the Texans up for another score. Then, just as quickly as it had come, the momentum had gone. The Chiefs had stolen it away early in the 2nd quarter.
The Chiefs got to sit out the wildcard round of the playoffs and gear up for the divisional round. While watching the games from last weekend, the Chiefs found out that they were going to play the Houston Texans after an exciting game against the Buffalo Bills in Houston.
It is week 16 of the 2019 NFL season and the 9-5 Texans travel to Tampa Bay to face a red-hot Buccaneers team that now finds themselves at 7-7. As they are eliminated from playoff contention, the Buc’s can only hope to slow the Texans’ chances of clinching their 6th AFC South division title this decade.
